October 27th, 2015 by MichiganLiving Apartments Vs House For Rent: Which is Which?

Today, many renters are torn between choosing an apartment or a house for rent. This has been a common question ever since and a lot of people would like to know the answer to this. The thing you should understand is the fact that each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. If you wish to make the right decision, you need to understand the benefits that come with both options.

Homes For Rent

To help you make the right choice, we have highlighted some of the benefits below:

Benefits of House For Rent

More space

The biggest advantage of a house for rent is that it offers you more space than an apartment does. The smallest space a house for rent can have is about 1000 square feet. Apartments have lesser square feet of space for that. In the event that you have a big family or you have many furniture, then house for rent might just be the best option for you.

More flexible

When it comes to decorating, owners of house rentals have more flexible policies or rules. Since you have the whole house to yourself, it will be a lot easier for you to decorate it in whatever way you wish. If you are the type of person who place focus on the aesthetic appeal of the home, then this is one option that you must consider.

Better privacy

If you value privacy above all, a house for rent can surely give you that. This option is also perfect if you wish to enjoy a quiet living arrangement. This is because you have the whole house (and yard, if you are lucky enough) at your disposal.

Accessible parking

It is true that apartments offer plenty of parking spaces. Despite this, it might be impossible for you to find a space that is just a few feet sway from your door. With a house for rent, you do nit have to worry about your parking space as you have the whole driveway to yourself.

Benefits of Apartments

Lower cost

Generally speaking, renting apartments is a much more cost effective option than choosing a house for rent. Since there are many tenants sharing to cover the cost of an apartment building, it is easier for landlords to lower rental fees. If you have a tight budget, you should certainly look into this option.

There are many apartment complexes, especially the big ones, that offer lots of amenities including swimming pools, fitness centers and even, tennis courts. Some of the basic amenities that apartments offer include security guards and gated entrances.

Repair and maintenance

The best thing about living in an apartment is that all the maintenance and repair responsibility is in the hands of the landlord.

Now that you know what their benefits are, you can be able to make informed decision about which option you should choose. When you make the decision, it is recommended that you weigh these benefits and determine which of these would be most useful for you.

At one point and time, we rented an apartment. It comes with alot less responsibility. Taking the step to rent a house is a bigger step. Thanks for the tips.

  2. Keikilani says:

There are pros and cons to both. I loved our first apartment we rented. It was a great first place.

  3. Melissa says:

Pros and cons to both, for sure. I’ve rented a condo and an apartment. I’d say it’s easier to deal with an apartment complex than an individual landlord. Then again, mine was a crook. So..there’s that 🙂

  4. Whenever we did rent, we rented apartments- it was only the two of us at the time. And we didn’t need a big house with higher rent! This post is a good overview of the pros/cons of each option!

  5. Lisa Martens says:

My first place of my own was an apartment. I loved it and it fit my young life style perfectly. No yard work or shoveling. From there I went to home ownership, which comes with a whole lot of responsibility and surprise expenses! Someday’s I miss that easy little apartment. 🙂

  6. Shell says:

It’s definitely important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision about where to live and whether you live in a house or apartment. Great info.

  7. Sarah Bailey says:

I live in an apartment and I have to admit I would love to move to a house at some point, its the noise from above that I find odd. x

  8. Alli says:

When my husband and I were first married, we lived in an apartment and it was so much fun. We’ve owned our own house for years, but I remember all the good times we had in our first apartment.

  9. Shasta says:

I would never choose to rent vs buy but I know not everyone has that option. The thing about renting is that it is just throwing money down the drain each and every month because at the end of the lease you don’t have anything to show for it.

  10. Betsy says:

Great pros and cons list. I’ve never rented a house but I have rented an apartment.

  11. Mary Edwards says:

This is such a great list to see the pros and cons of both. I have a few friends who are still renting and will pass this info on to them.

  12. Sarh S says:

I don’t think we could ever rent an apartment. We have 5 people in a large 2 bedroom duplex right now and we don’t have enough room. Not sure I could downsize enough, plus the neighbors in apartments from my experience are often too noisy.

  13. Heather says:

I’m all for investing in real estate, it doesn’t take a genious to know when the right time to buy and sell. For example just because my husband and I bought when it was a buyers market we could sell it now and pocket 110,000! You can’t do that if you rent.

  14. Tammileetips says:

I would rather rent a house then an apartment. I never cared for living in an apartment.

  15. coolchillmom says:

I recommend everyone buys a property. Sometimes you have to settle and rent, but the way to go should be buying

  16. Rebecca Swenor says:

This is awesome information for anyone looking to rent a place to live. There is an advantage to renting an apartment when there is repairs to be done which can be very expensive at times.

  17. Franc Ramon says:

I think houses gives you more space but are usually in a more remote area away from the city. Apartments are more affordable and has easier access to the city.

  18. Crystal says:

I rented two apartments before I bought my first home. The crazy thing was I bought my first home before I bought my first new car.

  19. Chantal says:

We are currently renting an apartment but I certainly see the appeal of renting a house! Thanks for sharing!

  20. For me, the biggest benefit of apartments is that there is less to clean.

  21. tara pittman says:

I prefer buying. I know that their are pros to renting to also.

  22. Elizabeth O. says:

A house for rent would be nice but it still depends on the location and the condition of the house. I guess there really are pros and cons to everything.

  23. Angie Scheie says:

I have yet to rent a house! I’d love the space and privacy that’s for sure, although rent is so crazy here in Seattle I don’t know if that will ever happen. ?

  24. Erika says:

I’m not in a position to buy, so renting seems like the most viable option for me. I’m in a transient period in my life and I don’t know where I’ll be, so property acquisition seems like a risky move because I’d need a quick turnaround.

  25. Natasha says:

Great points about the benefits as well as disadvantages.

  26. Liz Mays says:

I’m not sure there’s one right answer for everyone. It totally depends on the situation of each individual.

  27. Claudette says:

Apartment and preferably the top floor. At this stage of life, I don’t want or need the responsibilities of taking care of a house.

  28. I am more a fan of owning for either a house or an apartment. That is my opinion.

  29. Amber NElson says:

This is great advice for anyone who is looking to buy.
