During winter season, our energy consumption and bills shoot up to the roof. We use the heater 24/7 not to mention those gadgets and appliances that are working almost non stop at every part of our home.
To help keep your energy bills in manageable figure, below are few practical tips that can keep your house warm (meaning less heater/energy usage) during winter season.
Seal up those gaps and cracks
Sealing up cracks and gaps at every corner of your home can make a huge difference in terms of indoor temperature. You can use weather stripping around doors and windows and gap filler for cracks in the walls.
Close any rooms that are not in use
If you and other family members are staying in the living room, make sure to close those doors heading to the bedroom. If your heating system will let you, make sure to turn it off in unused rooms.
Use heavy curtains to at your windows
Using heavy curtains that extends below the window frame can help prevent the heat from escaping through the window. It works as an insulation that can keep the warmth inside your home.

When we moved into our current home years ago, it was old and poorly insulated. We’ve worked hard to get it properly insulated and boy, I can tell the difference. We also replaced the windows with double pane windows. It really does help.

Great tips! I live in an older home that needed a lot of work when we acquired it. Last year we were finally able to have insulation blown in and got everything sealed up. It was a huge project but is already starting to pay for itself. It has definitely helped keep the house comfortable and probably saves us up to 40% on our heating bill. It stays cooler in the summer too.

Heavy curtains are seriously helping at my house. my bedroom is in our cooler basement and we have super heavy curtains up and you’d never know we are in the basement.. such great advice here!

Those are some great tips. I never thought about closing vents in rooms we are not using and about using long curtains. We usually put plastic up in the windows to stop the cold air from coming in.
