My husband and I rented an apartment before we were married and we were not allowed to do ANYTHING. The landlord didn’t want holes in the walls,so we couldn’t even hang pictures on the wall.
I’m a renter and I do have some flexibility but I have been here a LONG time with a perfect track record, this is a great list, it’s great to remind folks to get permission first, younger renters or first time renters may not know that and then find out and be shocked they are not getting their deposit back.

Interesting. I rent an apartment currently … we are allowed to paint the walls but have to paint them back before moving out (thus, I’m not doing that, lol). We are allowed tacks or nails in the walls so I have some pictures up, though, luckily.

I rented an apartment about a year and a half ago because I didn’t want to continue with the upkeep of my home. My daughter and family moved into my home and I’m very lucky to have a landlord that allows me to basically do anything I want in my apartment as long as I keep the theme going.
If you want to get your safety deposit back absolutely follow Tip #1 because altering anything without permission is an easy way for a landlord to keep that money even if there isn’t a repair that needs to be made. All these are great tips to keep in mind while renting an apartment or house though.

Great tips. It is sometimes sad when you cannot decorate a place you’d want to call home. However, you did mention some good work-arounds that would be acceptable for both renters and landlords/landladies.
I experienced to decorate rent houses, and this post was right. Now were had our own and any time I could decorate my own without permission.
