The tips below will help you keep focused and organized during house hunting. They are proven to be effective most especially if you wanted to get the best house out of your money.

Tip Number 1 – Set Priorities

Listing down and separating your NEEDS and WANTS on a house will make house hunting easier. With this, you can create a checklist and see if a certain house you visit provides almost all of your needs compared to your wants. If the house provides almost all of your needs and wants, then pretty sure your checklist will come in handy.

Tip Number 2 – Proximity Of The Area

Create a checklist that you can use to see if the house is fairly accessible from your work, office or school. You can even include this one at the list of your WANTS but if you can, create a separate sheet for this category.

Tip Number 3 – Take Some Notes

You can use a simple notebook to list down your comments at each and every house you visit. With this, you can be sure that you won’t forget whatever you will notice.

Tip Number 4 – Review and Summarize Your Checklist and Notes

After a long tiring day of house tours and visits, you can now sit down and carefully review your checklists and notes. This way, you can fairly judge what house suits your needs, budget and lifestyle.

  • I am so not looking forward to the day we have to house-hunt. We currently rent. Though, I do know when we want to go through with it, what I want in a house. My priorities are fairly simple. A nice kitchen + dishwasher. A separate bathroom for my husband and I (we have one now in the home we rent … it’s amazing), oh and of course a front loading washer/dryer because the spinner one we have now completely ruins clothes.

  • House hunting has got to be one of the most exciting and stressful projects ever! It’s even worse when you mix in the stress of having to sell your current place.

I’ve bought property in Denmark while living in the US, and now I’m starting to house hunt in England while living in Denmark. It took me awhile to accept that bathtubs aren’t the norm in Denmark, and that it’s quite normal to have a washing machine in the kitchen in England… and good luck finding a garbage disposal or window screens in either place! Who knew?

  • Good tips! When we were searching for our house, my husband and I each made lists with our top 10 desires for a house. We compared notes, and made sure that the house we ended up with fulfilled a good number of those desires — or had the potential to do so down the road. Some things you can’t change (like how much land you have on the lot), but other things can be upgraded down the road (like a master bathroom that has builder-grade features). There will never be a *perfect* house, but usually there is one that has *most* of the things you want (or the potential!).

  • My husband and I have lived in the same house for years. I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Pretty soon, we’ll be house hunting for a vacation home at the beach, so I’ll keep these tips in mind.

  • It’s such a good idea to think about these things when house hunting. Finding a pretty house can really make you have tunnel vision and ignore all of the other factors.

  • My husband and I are constantly browsing real estate websites like Trulia and so far we’ve been pretty agreeable about what we want in our first home. Taking notes on which house has what features with a checklist is a great idea!

  • This is a great post and exactly what I needed! My husband and I are house hunting and it’s stressful!

  • Great tips! House hunting can be a very daunting task but it’s so rewarding when you find your dream home <3

  • Thank you very much. We are currently house hunting and its been a horrible stress on the both of us. everything seems so scattered and complicated. Putting this list into action will help big time for sure

  • These are great tips for finding a house. When we bought our house the main thing was the school district for us. Thanks for sharing.

  • Even if you have good to great credit remember it will make your life easier to find a mortgage provider and get pre-approved before you start shopping for your next home rather than placing an offer than scrambling to find someone to get the money from
